Suturing of a 2nd degree laceration

The suturing of a 2nd degree laceration can be undertaken using various techniques. The aim is always to re-establish the anatomy of the pelvic floor.

The contents of the chapter are as follows:

  • Anaesthetics (local infiltration and pudendal block is demonstrated)
  • Suturing using a continuous technique
  • Suturing using a mixed suturing technique
  • Healing in the postnatal period

International guidelines for professional treatment

The recommendations for suturing techniques and suture materials are in accordance with evidence-based guidelines from RCOG (Green-top 29).

These are supported by a Cochrane Review from 2007.
